Don’t freak out–We need it. Here’s what’s up. Animal sources of protein are rich in cholesterol which is critical for every cell in the body.
Cholesterol is used for:
- Vitamin d production
- Synthesizing hormones
- Proper brain function
- Protection against oxidative stress in the body (which is an imbalance of production and accumulation of oxygen in cells + tissues)
- Producing bile which is critical for digesting dietary fats
If you hear “high cholesterol” try not to throw the baby out with the bathwater and cut out animal meat/fat because it seems like the answer. Just like almost everything else, balance is crucial here and the body does indeed need cholesterol and a good source of it is in fact, meat. Let’s look further.
High cholesterol can often be a sign of a slow-moving thyroid so before jumping to conclusions, maybe consider having that checked. Cholesterol synthesizes hormones, but in order for that to happen, the thyroid needs to be working to ping cholesterol to convert.
You’ll want to support the thyroid, by supporting the liver (where it’s mostly converted) and opening up those detoxification pathways in order to support bringing cholesterol down.
